We are a family with a small homestead in the Ozarks. Our desire is to search out the Truth in a quest for a Biblical world view, which is looking at the world through the eyes of God, seeing it as He sees it-lost. Information presented here is left to the reader to decide any action to be taken, but we do strongly encourage those who read here to pray fervently.

Do You Have A No Comprimise Zone?
Take a look at this article and give it a good bit of thought, then answer the above question for yourself. In all honesty, this is an article that every Christian should read. Use the linked text to take you to the article, found at World Net Daily, written by Mike Schlote.

It Is Good To Scavenge
I finally, after four or five years, have a roof over the wood shed. This means that I will have dry firewood! If you only knew the way I had done things, you'd understand.
But the best part is the fact that I got the metal roofing for free! I have a friend at church that is in construction. So last Sunday, I asked if he knew of a good source that I could buy mix and match metal from. He said he knew a man that was in the roofing business and that he would check with him. To make a long story short, the next Wednesday, at church, my friend took me outside to show me he had gotten the metal, in the quantity and size I asked for, and I hauled it home this past Friday. I asked him what I owed him, he said nothing as he didn't pay for it. It was coming off an old roof that his buddy was re-doing. So, joy of joy's, I got enough to cover the whole woodshed for free.
God is so good. He provides and always goes beyond our own expectations. He even does the small things like used metal for a woodshed, praise Him!
I'd like to know, how has God blessed you recently? Leave a comment and share with us the Lord's blessings!

It's Dry In Texas
I figured out why I couldn't copy and paste into my blog, it had to do with an issue in Internet Explorer 8. I removed IE 8 and am back to IE 7 and all works as normal again. So here's one for your funny bone.
It's so dry in Texas that the Baptists are starting to baptize by sprinkling, the Methodists are using wet-wipes, the Presbyterians are giving out rain-checks, and the Catholics are praying for the wine to turn back into water.
Now that's dry!!!

Want Real Health Care? Eat Healthy
Health Insurance Companies May Become New Ally
Thursday, 10 September 2009
Michael Pollan has an excellent opinion piece in today’s New York Times (Thursday, Sept. 10) entitled "Big Food vs. Big Insurance" about how health care reform could turn health insurance companies into noisy advocates for healthy eating. He said even under the weaker versions of health care reform now on offer, health insurers would be required to take everyone at the same rates, provide a standard level of coverage and keep people on the rolls regardless of their health. This means every health insurance customer who doesn’t get Type 2 diabetes adds about $400,000 to the insurance company’s bottom line. Currently, the USA spends $147 billion to treat obesity and $116 billion to treat diabetes. Pollan said health care reform will add a powerful and wealthy ally to the alternative foods movement that can help checkmate the powerful agribusiness firms who have been able to swat down previous attempts at nutritional reform. He said the health insurance industry will begin buying seats on the agriculture committees and demanding that the next Farm Bill be written with the interests of the public health firmly in mind. Pollan said that all that will be required to acquire this new ally will be a health care bill that requires insurers to cover everyone on the same basis.

Wedgeloc Bracing

I have used some of these here on our homestead. They are called Wedgeloc braces that fit on a T-post to create bracing systems for you fencing needs. They can be used in a number of configurations. I have used them in a limited way but am anticipating using them on some new fencing I have to build. They have proven to me that they hold up pretty well. Use the link from the text to go to their website to learn more. Happy fencing.

Rain, Rain, Rain
It is raining. That is not a bad thing, in fact, it is a type of rain that seems very ratre for around here, slow and steady. I don't know, yet, how much has fallen but it will be a fair amount for sure. It is quite damp out there but that is not the only thing that gets damp. The rain dampens any idea of outside work there might be, outside of the usual homestead chores, that is. Can't cut wood, can't cut the grass. In other words, a good excuse to take a nap and wait for the grass to grow.
The grass is growing slower these days. The shorter, cooler days aren't conducive to growing warm season grasses. I am trying to establish a good cool season grass, but I am having trouble with it. The soil here is too acid, which I am working on and gaining on, slowly but surely. So, let it rain, we need it.

Registered Mini Hereford For Sale
This is Junebug. She is a three year old, registered mini Hereford. Junebug is a friendly little gal and quite cute, as my daughter puts it. I am selling her for a friend and have an idea of her worth but would also like to know what y'all think she's worth. Drop me a line. She can be delivered in a reasonable distance (say a days drive) for a little extra. You can contact me through this blog by leaving a comment, or, you can email me direct at sppowers@iglide.net I can also provide more information at that time. I think she is in the 000 frame score, but I am awaiting a more accurate measurement. Let me know.

Remember When
I was watching my girls doing their afternoon chores and I was reminded of the beauty of youth. Sometimes, I like to act like a kid, but those times are getting further between.
Do you remember this? I'll race ya to the tree! Then the leader begins the race with a common phrase that has transcended generations, Onyurmarkgessetgo! usually uttered so fast that, inevitably, someone gets left in the dust, in tears, and it is never the leader.
Then, to be fair, they pick a third party to utter the start. This person always has to be a wiseguy, On your mark, (pause) get SET, (bigger pause) STOP! (Now laughing hysterically.) This person will do this several times to see who will jump the line. It is comical to watch from the outside, but never when you are actually involved.
Sometimes they have to throw in, One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready and four to STOP! HA HA HA!
It is fun to watch children play. You find out that things are not all that different from when we were kids. Just watch them sometime, and, if you can, join them. You might pay for it a few days but it will be worth it.

More Homestead Projects
Tomorrow I get to take the second half of my holiday, so I will come home from work early. The plan is to take the trailer into town and get the lumber for the 11 year-in-the-making book selves for the living room wall. I can feel my wife's excitement. She's been waiting for this moment a long time. You know, it makes me feel good to honor her even when it is 11 years over due.
For myself, I will bring home the 6 year-in-the-making metal for the roof of the wood shed. I built the frame of the shed 6 years ago and it has been sitting, as a shell, since. It will be nice to get rid of the torn, ragged plastic I have been using to cover the wood. WOOHOO!
OK men, don't leave me hanging. Tell me I'm not the only one who puts things off.....for years.

Making Preps For The Winter
In the grocery business, I get paid holidays but I usually have to take them in half day increments. In other words, if the store is open, I have to be there, at least part of the day. Today, Labor Day, was no different. I worked half a day then came home and worked twice as hard trying to take advantage of the time on the homestead.
I am in the process of cutting firewood. It is very sad to say that we had none, until now. Actually, I am finding a hidden blessing from last year's ice storm. There is a bunch of wood on the ground, already aged. We would like to stay warm in the cold months, so this has become a priority. Especially since my daughter and I just witnessed a huge flock of geese migrating. I have a feeling that may be an omen (I don't really believe in omens, per Se, but I do believe that God gives signs), their migration is about a month early for our part of the country. MORE WOOD!
What are you doing to prepare, for anything, on your homestead? I want to know, leave a comment, or two, or three, or.....

From Boom To Bust For BioDiesel
It would seem the ride is over for the bio diesel bus. You can read this article to learn more. While you're at it, there is a really interesting article just to the right of the fuel article. The second one makes the statement that raw milk is good for the soil, hmmm. Enjoy by using the link above. Thanks for stopping by.
