What a beautiful thing! YEsterday, I had my adoptive son with me on our way home. We turned on to our county road and came across a King snake! We stopped the car to get out and see it. (That is the homeschool mind in me.) We examined it, managed to make it mad at us, freaked out the boy and came home to talk about our discovery. It was wonderful to look the snake up in the book and read about it. My son learned a lot!
Today, on our way home, we found a snapping turtle on the drive way! We had fun making him mad too. I took a stick and put it in front of him to get him to latch on. I was trying to re-enforce the idea that we are not to put our fingers there. We then looked at his shell and tail and had a nice talk about it. The tail looks pre-historic, and the shell looks like the serated edge of a knife. We talked about the folds of skin that protrude from the shell, and how hard they bite. Then I moved him off to the side of the driveway and came home.
When we drove past the cows, we saw another beautiful site. Not just the cows grazing, but the birds that were "grazing" with them. You know you're on the right track with your management when the birds join in on the pasture. There they get the bugs and other things left and exposed by the cattle. This is exciting to me as this has not been a regular occurance on our farm. But we have put some work into the soil and the cows and are now beggining to see how God designed things to be. We have a very long way to go. Please, don't mistake me on that. But, I can see progress!
On a side note, we hope to be listed soon on eatwild.com promoting our pastured poultry and rabbits! Look for us there in the near future. Speaking of rabbits, we had another doe kindle her kits today, giving us a total of 18 little ones! The kids are beside themsleves! Until next time...
