What kind of a title is this? You'll understand more after reading this post on Alan Nation's blog. To put it into my own words, I would have to say that wheat farmers should have been wealthy, but they missed the boat. Mr. Nation has been writing about the coming of this catastrophe in the Stockman Grassfarmer for some time with a fair degree of prophetic accuracy.
No man has ever thrown a brick so high that it didn't come back down. Commoditiy prices went sky high last summer, and, it seems, farmers tended to store their commodities waiting for an even higher price. Unfortunately, the prices fell quicker than they had hoped.
Many farmers even spent the new wealth before they had it on new machinery and upgrades. With the prices falling, it will be difficult to pay the piper.
