Another question rolling around in my brain is what species of grass should I sow? I am thinking of Spring time when the weather turs warmer. I will still need some cool season grass for that time of year, maybe Orchard grass, rye, or fescue. But I want some more warm season growth, as well. Our pastures have a good bit of little bluestem and some orchard grass in them now, but I am needing something more.
I have a rancher friend who planted 10 acres of Bermuda grass for his horses. The stand took off! I like the looks of it. It is thick and bunched, yet fine like hair. He said he got 700 square balse off of it last June. Now, I can't make hay, but you can see that it would feed my cattle.
The trouble is, that I don't have the equipment that he has. I would just have to broadcast it by hand. Also, it is expensive at $5 per pound. But how long will it take to pay for itself?
Thus, I am searching for grass seed that won't break the bank. If anyone reading this would have any suggestions, please email and tell me.
