Garden pic

This is a picture of the new construction I mentioned in my last post. There were a total of 50 bricks used in this bed, which is taking a lot more dirt to fill than I anticipated. In the middle, you can see a square bed with some plants in it, this is my wife's herb garden that has been there since the first, about 6 years or so. We just built the new garden around it. On the end closest to the camera, she plans to plant June Bearing strawberries and on the far side will be a bed of asparagus, mainly. The dirt is from piles of topsoil that were dug out from the construction of our home 10 years ago. Note the Radio Flyer in the forefront. The kids were using plastic shovels to fill it with dirt, then hauled it to the garden. Bless them all, they worked very hard and were rewarded.

I cannot give dimensions as I never thought to pay attention to that this time. I was the labor of this project and was quite pooped at the time of this picture.

To the right, at the very edge of the photo, you can catch a glimpse of the hoops that were used all winter. The plants grew very well under it. The only problem was we hadn't counted on snow and ice accumulating on it and forcing it to collapse. Some of the plants were crushed, as a result. However, we are enjoying fresh lettuce still and have cabbage growing well along with beets. Way in the front, you can see part of another bed. This one has primarily garlic in it right now. When that is harvested, it will be planted with whatever my lovely wife decides to plant.

There are plans in the works to expand more. And we may just keep expanding. The sky is the limit with this type of gardening. We wouldn't garden any other way. Weeding is much easier and we do things in much of the fashion of "square foot gardening" and this method fits perfectly.

This picture was taken last year just after we added the hoops. As I said, we made it through most of the winter with Green, growing plants. We lost a bunch in February due to snow and ice. Then came a lot of rain. We recently purchase a bunch of 1 inch by 4 inch long PVC clamps to hold the plastic on. You can check out the very wide range of PVC products that will fit almost every need you can dream up by going to www.flexpvc.com Their prices are quite reasonable and you can get things you will not find elsewhere.

Great blog! I'm going to link to you and add you to Reader so I check in as you write.

"You named the calf Spot? HOW are you going to EAT a calf named SPOT? That's like eating the DOG!" Are you hearing that yet? When we named our Belted Galloway/Dexter cross bull Spot people had head fits. They were horrified. He tasted good.

Thanks for the kind words! For the record, our five year old daughter named the calf. They have a full understanding of what he is intended for, though. We might save him a little longer to breed to our dexter cow.

Now a Belted Galloway/Dexter is a cool combo.
