Pastuered Poultry

Well, we have arrived at the finish line, so to speak. We will be butchering our first batch of birds this weekend. The Lord has blessed us with few mortalities and we will end up short only three. We have also been blessed to have sold them all and save a few for ourselves (that's the best part!)

What I would like to do is take some pictures of the grass after the chickens have done their duty. You will be amazed at the lushness (is that a word?) of the grass after the chickens have been over it.

This is the grass....

...this is the grass on chicken manure, any questions?
Seriously though, this is on a mob density of 38 broilers in a 6x6x2 moveable pen (tractor). This is a bit much as you can tell from the first picture. You can actually see the outline of the tractor where the chickens have eaten it down to dirt. But it does recover, however, it takes longer. The results are nice though.

How often do you move your chicken tractor?

We move them twice, daily. Like I said, we had a few too many chickens in there for the size of the tractor, for this size, the optimal amount is 25-30 birds.
