We are a family with a small homestead in the Ozarks. Our desire is to search out the Truth in a quest for a Biblical world view, which is looking at the world through the eyes of God, seeing it as He sees it-lost. Information presented here is left to the reader to decide any action to be taken, but we do strongly encourage those who read here to pray fervently.

Continue To Homestead?
The heat is ruining things in a big way. We have not had any significant rain for a month, in fact the last time it rained we got about 4 inches back in may. In one week it looked like it had not rained at all. That's all we've had in several months too. The grass is dead, dried and crunchy and I am facing feeding hay in July for the second year in a row. The price of hay has gone way up because of a shortage all over the area and surrounding states that are in similar condition. So...convince me that the homestead thing is still worth it.

I wish I could convince you to keep at it, but it seems to me that you guys are, shall we say "strong willed" enough to keep going. We're in the same heat / drought situation as you are (although we didn't get the 4"), everything is dry and crunchy and I've been feeding hay this entire year now (although that is partially our fault as we don't have adequate pasture). I hope that our new hay guy isn't lying to us when he says that we're still getting the hay from him.....it's been several weeks now and still no hay. It seems as if the Ozarks may be in a Dust Bowl'ish cycle, which won't bode well for ANY thing that eats grass or anything that eats the things that eat grass. Not to mention the fact that trying to keep the gardens from shriveling up and blowing away in the dust. Bad, bad year already and it isn't even July.
Sorry to ramble on. But hope you keep on keeping on. Adjustments may have to be made, goals may have to be changed, but I think it's worth it.
Sometimes, it's just a matter of asking yourself if other options are TRULY viable.
Yes, I think a "retooling" is in order.
