The World's First Mini Black Baldie? I Doubt It, But We're Excited Anyway.

I thought I'd share some pics of our new little calf. He was born Saturday morning around 7:00 a.m. He is the product of our minature Hereford bull and our Dexter cow. We usually breed the cow to the Dexter bull (which, by the way, we may be interested in selling. Contact us if you're interested at sppowers@iglide.net . You can view him here. ) but I got the idea to see if we could get a black baldie out of the mini Hereford and it worked. I doubt that this is the first calf of this kind but it is quite unique and a pleasure to us.

A New Life On The Homestead!

Good grief! Just a few hours old and here she comes with the camera!

This is the calf with no name. The kids have not dubbed her yet. Yup, it's a heifer! She's a beauty and got her daddy's looks. She was born very early Tuesday morning (March 10) and I got quite a welcome surprise when I went out to feed the animals. She is a cross between Dexter (daddy) and Red Devon/something (momma) Ahhh, fresh milk is coming soon!

Finally! Pictures!

Well, here are some pictures that I promised of the new heiffer calf. Our oldest daughter named her Stormy because she was born on a very stormy night. You know, that is when these things semm to happen, isn't it?

This is the only close up I could get. She is a cute little bugger, isn't she? She is 100% Dexter and of the long leg variety. She is the spittin' image of her momma. You can check around our blog and find pictures of the Sire, if you're interested.

She is now, officially, one week old and doing fine. She is nursing and getting feisty. She likes to jump around like she was a goat or something. She is about that size :-)

Stormy is looking for her first taste of hay, in this picture. I don't know, really, I just thought it was a cute picture.

Yes folks, she will be for sale. Our goal is to produce small cattle for small homesteads, like ours. We also want to provide animals that are affordable because we know what it is like to be on a budget, desire to raise your own food, and not have the money to get started. So, we have gone the route of purebred Dexters without the pedigree's, thus we are able to sell them without the inflated pedigree price. If you're interested in her, drop us a line. Hey folks! Well, our Dexter momma is starting to bag up now. Well, actually, we noticed it a couple of days ago. Her two back quarters are getting full with the two front quarters starting to fill. I figure a few days yet, but we'll keep watching. This will be her third calf with us and her sixth, total. So far she has thrown all heifers. Of course, we would like another heifer, but we'll take a bull, as well. We'll keep you posted, right here.
